Assembling TCP/IP packets in optical burst switched networks

چکیده
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a promising paradigm for the next-generation Internet infrastructure. In this paper, we study the performance of TCP traffic in OBS networks and in particular, the effect of assembly algorithms on TCP traffic. We describe three assembly algorithms in this paper and compare them using the same TCP traffic input. The results show that the performance of the proposed Adaptive-Assembly-Period (AAP) algorithm is better than that of the Min-BurstLength-MaxAssembly-Period (MBMAP) algorithm and the Fixed-AssemblyPeriod (FAP) algorithm in terms of goodput and data loss rate. The results also indicate that burst assembly mechanisms affect the behavior of TCP in that the assembled TCP traffic becomes smoother in the short term, and more suitable for transmission in optical networks.

Generalized burst assembly and scheduling techniques for QoS support in optical burst-switched networks
In this paper, we address the issue of providing differentiated services to IP packets over an optical burst switched core network, and we introduce a new approach for assembling packets into a burst. In this technique, a composite burst is created by combining packets of different classes into the same burst. The packets are placed from the head of the burst to the tail of the burst in order o...
متن کاملA new window-based burst assembly scheme for TCP traffic over OBS
In this paper, the impact of burstification delay on the TCP traffic statistics is presented as well as a new assembly scheme that uses flow window size as the threshold criterion. It is shown that short assembly times are ideally suitable for sources with small congestion windows, allowing for a speed up in their transmission. In addition, large assembly times do not yield any throughput gain,...
متن کاملFAST TCP over optical burst switched networks: Modeling and stability analysis
FAST TCP is important for promoting dataintensive applications since it can cleverly react to both packet loss and delay for detecting network congestion. This paper provides a continuous time model and extensive stability analysis of FAST TCP congestion-control mechanism in bufferless Optical Burst Switched Networks (OBS). The paper first shows that random burst contentions are essential to st...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of TCP over optical burst-switched (OBS) WDM networks
This paper studies the performance of TCP transport protocol over an optical burst-switched (OBS) wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) wide-area network. Typically, an OBS network consists of optical core routers and electronic edge routers connected by WDM links. At the network ingress nodes, IP packets are assembled into bursts that are routed through the core network and disassembled at the...
متن کاملSurvey of QoS issues for TCP connections in Optical Burst Switched Networks
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) can cater the requirements of bandwidth intensive applications like Voice-over-IP, video conferencing, interactive video on demand. It is switching technique for the next generation optical networks. This paper deals with merits and the protocols used for the Optical Burst Switching. A brief survey of QoS open research issues for TCP/OBS connections is also discussed.
